Mentoplasty

Mentoplasty / Chin Surgery
The face is the result of the union of different structures. The most important structure of the face is the chin, "Function of the projection, shape of the chin, and its relation to the rest of the easy structure."
By modifying this, with facial implants or the filing of the mandibular bone, it is possible to improve the proportion and facial profile.
Is it the surgery I want, an effective surgery?
If you have a small or retracted chin with normal dental occlusion. Wide and highly projected chin with normal dental occlusion.
Patients with blur in the angle between the chin and the neck.
This procedure can be performed alone or in conjunction with another aesthetic procedure.
Surgery planning
  • In consultation with Dr. Galván, he will assess their health status; as well as determine the proportion of your chin and face.
  • As a patient, you should express your expectations in order to show you the alternatives available for your problem, the risks and limitations of each one.
  • The doctor with you, will determine which is the procedure that provides you with a more adequate facial silhouette, predetermining the positive characteristics and modifying those that make you ugly.
Surgery and Anesthesia
Mentoplasty should be performed in a hospital or clinic, under general or local anesthesia and sedation.
The procedure will be on an outpatient basis, that is, in a few hours you can return and recover at home.
Mentoplasty consists in that either through a buccal incision (inside the mouth) or through a skin incision below the chin we can introduce an implant to increase its projection and thus improve its relationship with other structures, especially the lip and nose.

There are implants of different shapes and sizes, as well as various materials such as silicone, medpor, ...
Therefore, you should always make sure that the device to be used is the right one for you.
After surgery (postoperative).

  •      Intervention with local anesthesia, local with sedation or general.
  •      Intervention duration 1 hour.
  •      We remove points in 7 days.
  •      Elastic chin rest 1 week all day, and 3 more weeks only at night.
  •      Back to work in 5-7 days.
  •      Return to exercise and normal life in 4 weeks.

You may have some discomfort, not pain, easily treatable by taking oral pain relievers. It will be very important that you take the antibiotic that is prescribed to avoid infections. After the procedure, it is normal for the area to be inflamed and bruised, frequently spreading to the neck, resolving in about 7-10 days. The sutures located in the mouth are reabsorbed and only those located under the chin will have to be removed in the event that this route has been used in about seven days. It is recommended to have the intervened area immobilized all day, for a week by means of a chin rest, although on the third or fourth day the patient can already remove it to clean the area. In turn, it is from this moment that you can return to work.Remember that it is important not to mobilize or massage the area for about 7-10 days. The chin guard should wear it for one more month at night, at which point it will be possible to carry out an absolutely normal daily activity.

The reviews during the first month are made once a week, becoming quarterly during the first year, at which time if everything is correct we will discharge you. However, if you have any questions or problems, do not hesitate to contact us. We will be at your disposal at any time to solve your problem or doubt, in consultation or by phone.
Chin surgery can be performed as an isolated procedure, although it is more frequent to complement other procedures on the facial area.
Mentoplasty is often combined with liposuction of the neck, accentuating the mandibular line and the definition of the neck. It is also frequently combined with rhinoplasty in order to harmonize and balance facial proportions.

In addition, although less frequently, it can be performed in the same act together with a facelift or blepharoplasty, or a facial fat filler (lipostructure) with the aim of improving the facial oval.
Procedures
  •     Infiltration with fillers or fat from the patient himself. These procedures are indicated in very mild cases or to make a touch-up after another procedure. They are very safe and simple techniques and are performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The substances that infiltrate are generally hyaluronic acid and in very specific cases biopolymers. Another filler that can be used is the patient's own fat that is obtained by extracting by means of liposuction from a selected area. Filling with grease will require several infiltrations spaced over time to obtain a definitive result.

  •     Implantation of a prosthesis. They are indicated for moderate and severe cases. They can be placed under local anesthesia on an ambulatory basis or with general anesthesia. These prostheses can be made of different materials, such as silicone, Medpor, Goretex®, etc. They are non-reactive materials and that today, have achieved great security. They are placed in a very tight pocket on the chin, although sometimes it is necessary to fix them to the bone with screws or resorbable sutures. They can generally be carved in both the width and the desired projection. The approaches (scar) to implant them vary from the intraoral (inside the lower lip next to the gum) or below the chin or submental, being a very small scar and that over time goes unnoticed.

  •     Bone advancement genioplasty. This technique, which is the most complex of the three, is used in moderate or severe cases. It is performed under general anesthesia one day after admission. By means of an intraoral incision, the most declining point of the chin is approached, and after taking the necessary measurement to achieve the precise advance, a section (osteotomy) is made in the bone and the planned advance, fixing it in its new position using plates absorbable material.

When, on the other hand, a decrease in the projection and shape of the chin is necessary, the procedure is very similar to the previous one, with the difference that through the same approach, what we perform is a file or cut in the bone (osteotomy) . This is how we can shorten and narrow the jaw. Likewise, if a possible asymmetry or difference in shape or size is identified between one side of the face, it will be possible to act by moving forward or backward on the side that we want or need to modify.

The results
Don't expect an immediate result after surgery. The decrease in inflammation is progressive, so the final result is obtained in the second trimester. For this reason, despite the fact that the result is immediately noticeable, its appearance will improve as the months go by, which will make you increasingly happy.
