What is eyelid surgery?

The eyes are our main facial feature, they become the center of attention of all. With the passage of time, folds appear around the eyes and bags in the lower eyelids, as a result of excess skin and fat, very unattractive, aging look and conveying a feeling of tiredness and sadness.

At Galvan Plastic Surgery Institute, we help you solve this problem through blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, it is the surgery with which we correct the excess of skin in the upper eyelids and the bags of fat that appear in the lower eyelids. It should be noted that some people, due to their genetic component, face accelerated aging, resulting in the appearance of prominent eye bags, which may require this eyelid surgery at younger ages.
.

Blepharoplasty in Mexico, corrects the drooping upper eyelids and the bags that occur in the lower eyelids through a surgical procedure. This surgery solves the aesthetic aspect of the tired look, which makes us look older than we really are. However, in some cases blepharoplasty is necessary to correct the visual problems caused by the extremely drooping upper eyelids.

Why is it that the upper eyelid ages more?

People whose appearance is affected by the appearance of drooping or swollen eyelids are special candidates for eyelid surgery. The average age at which patients undergo blepharoplasty is greater than 35 years, although there are cases of younger patients who intervene at an earlier age because they are genetically predisposed to this problem. We emphasize that blepharoplasty deals only with the eyelids, so in some cases you can improve the bags or dark circles without surgery with a treatment to rejuvenate the look without surgery. In each case, it will be the plastic surgeon who, after evaluating the area to be treated, will inform you about the most suitable techniques and treatments.

All of our patients with eyelid bags and / or drooping eyelids due to excess skin have solved their aesthetic problem and have improved their self-confidence thanks this procedure.

Aging of the upper eyelid?

The aging of the upper eyelid happens in two ways: losing volume or increasing volume. The upper eyelid has only two fatty compartments, called the medial and the central latero. In addition to these, there is a small fat pad immediately below the eyebrow, known as rood. As you get older your eyebrow falls and thins due to the loss of volume of this fat pad, roof.

Medial Infraorbital bags and laterocental

Something different happens with the medial and latero central infraorbital bags. These fat bags are found inside the orbital cleft of the skull and over the years can:
1. Hypertrophy and being more notorious, or
2. Atrophying and becoming smaller in volume. "Deformity in A" (A frame deformity)

Obviously, depending on the type of aging in question, the eyelid will have to be treated in one way or another. The simplest of a blepharoplasty is the excision of excess skin (remove excess skin).
The really complex and important aspect of any eyelid surgery is how to treat fatty structures. Today we know that the infraorbital fat bags must be treated conservatively, that is, avoid aggressive removals to avoid sunken eyes. And in the case of aging due to atrophy of the fatty compartments, they must be preserved and even fat added to the upper eyelid (lipofilling).

Aging of lower eyelid

Unlike the upper eyelid that can age in two ways, the lower eyelid ages in only one way. The bags of this eyelid protrude forward and the orbital rim becomes thinner, in other words, the bags mark the groove of the eyecup further. In this case, what should be done is to remove part of the fat from the lower fatty compartments and inject a small portion of fat in the most central portion of the eyecup. This procedure must be performed transconjuntival way to avoid touching the lower eyelid muscle avoiding possible alterations of the contraction of the latter that would make eyelid surgery evident.

Planning for your Blepharoplasy

In the first consultation Dr. Jorge Galván, will evaluate your sight and have a tear volume test performed on you. It is necessary to inform him if you take any medication, if you smoke and if you are allergic to any medication. You should let him know if you wear glasses or contact lenses. In this first consultation your problem will be evaluated and it will be assessed if it is necessary to operate the four eyelids, only two (lower or higher). He will explain the techniques and the type of anesthesia that will be used, where the surgery will be performed, the risks and the cost of the intervention.

Dr. Jorge Galván will give you specific indications on how to prepare for this eyelid cosmetic surgery, it is essential to carry them out in detail. A careful compliance will make your blepharoplasty in Mexico a success.

Blepharoplasty and anesthesia

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is performed in an operating room, a clinic or hospital. Usually, the patient is discharged within a few hours of the operation. This cosmetic surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and sedation, has a duration of between 1 and 2 hours.

The incisions in the upper eyelids are hidden in the natural folds of the same. And in the lower eyelids is made under the eyelashes or inside the same eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty), the great benefit of this technique is that it does not touch the orbicularis oculi muscle, so that the ocular expression remains intact.

Canthopexy - Canthoplasty

Occasionally, in older patients the insertion ligament of the eyelids lengthens and the external angle of the eye moves downward and inward with the consequent decrease in the width of the same; the increase of the curvature of the inferior palpebral edge and the lateral fall of the eye produce a sad aspect to the patient. In these cases the plastic surgeon recommends a canthopexy-cantoplasty to correct the lateral angles of the eyelids and provide an aspect of happinessl.

After Blepharoplasty (Postoperative)

After eyelid surgery, an ointment is used in the eyes to lubricate them and a soft bandage with steri-strips is placed. In some cases there may be some discomfort on the eyelids, which is quickly relieved by the medication prescribed by the doctor. It is extremely important to keep the head elevated for a few days after surgery and apply cold compresses, to reduce inflammation and bruising.
You will be instructed how to wash your eyes and will be told if it is necessary to apply eye drops to keep your eyes hydrated. In the first weeks you may experience excessive tearing, hypersensitivity to light and temporary changes in visual acuity, such as blurred or double vision, all of which are transient.
After 5 days, the stitches will be removed. You will notice that the edema and the bruises will gradually diminish until they disappear completely, and you will begin to look and feel much better. Patients start reading or watching television in 2 or 3 days. However, if you wear contact lenses you will not be able to use them until 2 weeks later. After the operation you may feel uncomfortable wearing contact lenses, but over time you will return to normal life.
In a period of one week to 10 days, you can return to work depending on your particular case. The use of makeup is allowed, it is important to wear sunglasses for a few weeks and use total protection in the eyelids to avoid pigmentation. After 3 weeks you will be able to perform more intense activities.
