Calf Augmentation

Calf Augmentaion

Calf Implants
The calf or calf area may require an increase in volume, either because constitutionally it is a very thin area and you want to enhance its contour without doing physical exercise or to correct depressions and asymmetries associated with muscle diseases or trauma.

This increase in volume can be obtained by two methods:

By injecting own fat after performing liposuction from another area, achieving moderate increases in volume and correction of depressions and asymmetries.
By placing silicone gel prostheses specifically designed for this area, which are inserted through an incision in the posterior fold of the knee, placing them under the fascia of the calf. The anesthesia for this intervention may be general or epidural.
This intervention is frequently associated with liposuction of fatty areas in the knees and ankles, thus trying to improve the entire leg as an aesthetic unit. After the operation, you will have to wear a bandage for 2 or 3 days and you will be able to gradually incorporate yourself into your working life after a relative rest of 4-5 days.
Surgical procedure
As with all Calf Augmentation surgery , a preoperative examination of the patient is required to detect any possible abnormality that could contraindicate the operation.

The intervention is performed under epidural or general anesthesia and lasts approximately 1 hour. The procedure involves making a four-centimeter-long incision near the back of the knee. This creates a pocket between the inner belly of the twin muscle and its fascia.
This serves to place in this cavity a prosthesis adapted to the needs of each patient. In this sense, it should be noted that the implants are specific to each anatomical area. In general, a 36-hour stay in the clinic is required to carry out the treatment.
Calf remodeling does not always require prosthetic implantation. To modify the shape of the cylinder that can be a leg or calf we use Liposculpture. This creates a slimmer leg.
What is calf augmentation?
It is the implantation of special prostheses that mimic the shape of the twin muscle or gastrocnemius. They are made of silicone gel and are implanted in the posterior region of the knee (popliteal).
What is the technique?

It consists of creating a pocket on the back of the leg to implant a silicone gel prosthesis that creates a shape for the slimmer calf.

This procedure is recommended in cases where there is a shapeless tubular calf, good coverage for the prosthesis and elastic skin.
Advantages over other techniques
This type of defect can only be solved in this way. When it is due to excess fat, it can be used to shape without the need to implant prostheses.
Preparation
In addition to the general recommendations for surgery, in this case it is advisable to keep the skin well hydrated and schedule a subsequent week of relative rest.
It is usually performed with epidural anesthesia but, as always, it is decided after a patient examination and appropriate preoperative studies and the anesthetist's criteria.

The surgery is performed in the operating rooms of the Clinic or Hospital, fully equipped for this type of intervention. At the end of the surgery, the patient remains a recovery time estimated by the Anesthesia Service, before going up to her room. The hours of admission to the clinic will depend on the anesthesia used.
When do you start to see results?
The increase in volume is immediately appreciated, but the edema or inflammation that appears makes it less evident and natural at first.

Recovery should be maintained the week following the intervention of rest, as well as staying with the stockings that we recommend for a few weeks (depending on the case, this time is variable).
We recommend winter surgery for these reasons.
What are the risks of the intervention?
In surgery to increase the volume of the calves, the most serious risks may be the change in the sensitivity of the skin of the legs, something rare, but possible, with temporary or permanent loss of sensation. An alteration of the scar may also be possible, although it is very rare. Another risk is the extrusion of the implant, something possible if a suitable layer of tissue is missing or if an infection occurs. The possibility of a displacement of the implant accompanied by a distortion in the shape can also be considered, another very rare possibility but that would mean a second operation to correct it. Also, as with breast prostheses, capsular contracture or hardening of the scar tissue around the prosthesis may occur over time.
In addition, the risks inherent in any operation must be considered. The main ones are the appearance of postoperative infections and bleeding and those related to the use of anesthesia.
From what age can I have surgery?
From 18 years old.
Is the postoperative period very painful?
No, the inconvenience is rare.

What aftercare should I follow?
The patient gradually recovers so that after a week he can walk at a normal pace. After this period, the stitches are removed and the scar is reduced to an extension of about four centimeters near the posterior fold of the knee. In any case, it is advisable to wear elastic compression stockings for three weeks.
Should special exercises be done to aid recovery?
Just walk. The patient is given specific guidelines: the first 15 days walking is difficult, so he will have to walk more slowly.
When will the patient be able to take the first shower?
The day after the intervention but protecting the scar.
How long do I have to wait to start playing sports?
One month.
When will the patient be able to go to the sauna, pool and gym?
After 30 days have elapsed.
When will you be able to sunbathe and UVA rays?
One month after the intervention.
What drugs should be avoided before and after the operation?
As before any operation, the patient must refrain from ingesting aspirin or other anticoagulants during the three weeks prior to the intervention. In any case, the preparation will include specific instructions and a review of the medications used in each case.
After how many days can you go back to work?
If the work does not require physical effort or long movements, the patient will be able to carry out her daily life after the first week.
Can the prosthesis break and under what circumstances?
Really extraordinary circumstances would have to come, like an accident.
